New Township Manager Maureen Feyas takes the reins
You have known Maureen Feyas as an administrative assistant, zoning officer, assistant township manager and, in the last few weeks, interim township manager. Starting Monday, Maureen is the new full-fledged Township Manager – the first female to hold the top spot in the history of Nether Providence.
The Board of Commissioners officially announced her appointment Thursday at the monthly meeting, following a unanimous public vote. But it was after 7 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 8th) inspections at the Public Works and Gouley Park renovation sites that board President Kait McKenzie and Commissioner Matt Garson offered her the job.
As township manager, Maureen will oversee the day-to-day operations of the municipality, work with the Commissioners and community leaders, and spearhead initiatives to address Nether Providence’s needs.
“I’m ready for a new adventure,” Maureen says, smiling.
Maureen follows Dave Grady, who resigned after 10 years of service in August. When Dave left, and township leaders announced a regional search to fill the position, Maureen hesitated to throw her hat in the ring, but only briefly.
“I loved what I was doing. I thought it would be Dave and I until the end,” she says. “But then I thought, why not throw my hat in the ring.”
Maureen was one of 54 applicants and among seven invited for an interview.
One of the questions the hiring panel asked her was about the challenges she faced as interim township manager.
Dave left on a Friday. That following Monday, Maureen says, it was business as usual. “I just hit the floor running,” she says. “I did my best to pick up where Dave left off.”
She credits an amazing team for support.
“Since Dave left, everyone has chimed in, keeping everything moving,” Maureen says. “We are so fortunate to have such amazing people.”
A lifelong Delaware County resident, Maureen grew up in the Drexel Hill section of Upper Darby and currently resides in Brookhaven. She graduated from Archbishop Prendergast High School and Delaware County Community College, where she studied early childhood education. After a few years teaching, her professional path pivoted twice in unexpected but welcome directions.
She had been working in sales when she applied for an administrative assistant position with the township in 2005. Noting she was hired in May and married in June, the switch to local government came at an opportune time for the newlywed, especially schedule wise.
“They had an opening for AA, and I applied for it. Here we are, 20 years later,” Maureen says.
Maureen had been working as an administrative assistant for five years when she took on the added duties of zoning officer. She continued as a zoning officer when she was named assistant township manager in November 2023.
Her current focus is the 2025 budget and several grants expiring at the end of 2024. Moving forward, she plans to expand on sidewalk and walkability projects in the township.
Maureen’s favorite part of government work is interacting with residents.
“I like being out in the community,” Maureen says. “I like helping people solve an issue.”
In her office, Maureen has a series of affirmation plaques displayed on the wall, reflecting her positive and compassionate leadership style:
Dream big. Be kind. Be positive. Work hard. Stay humble.
When she is not working, Maureen enjoys spending quality time with her husband, Jeremy, and children, Brianna, Liam and Scarlett.
