Nether Providence Township Police Department Monthly Police Report

The Nether Providence Township Police Department Needs Your Help!

The Nether Providence Township Police Department is seeking assistance from businesses and the community to aid in the continuing funding our canine (K-9) program. The program started in September of 2005, when I was sent to Florida to train with several types of working dogs. After completion of the training, the “K-9 Unit” was immediately implemented and was the first such program established in the townships history. My K-9 partner Mickey, a German Sheppard from Holland, is trained in the detection of several types of illegal narcotics.

Mickey has been instrumental in searching for and locating a multitude of illegal narcotics both in and around Nether Providence Township. By the virtue of their extremely keen senses, especially smell, the K-9 is able to locate a variety of illegal narcotics that would otherwise go undetected. By retaining the K-9 Unit out on patrol, it provides the police department with an important weapon against the possession, transportation and/or distribution or sale of drugs on our streets and throughout our community. It also gives the residents and businesses owners in and around this township the comfort of knowing that a certified and trained patrol dog is on duty, working to protect them and their children. The K-9 Unit is also utilized for community and school functions, in and around the Wallingford area, so people can meet Mickey and learn about its various functions and abilities. The K-9 Unit also collaborates with various law enforcement agencies, school administrators, community leaders and parents to assist in community policing and drug awareness. Children also love to learn about Mickey as I find it’s a great way for an otherwise intimidated child to meet a police officer and “break the ice.”

We are seeking your support of a monetary donation to help defray the rising costs of maintaining the K-9 Unit. Your donation will benefit by assisting in the purchasing of much needed equipment, training and aid in continuing our successful program. We thank you for your support.

Police Updates

During the last 4 or 5 months, the Police Department has been actively engaged in the investigation and apprehension of those persons responsible for the burglaries, thefts, and other property crimes being committed in Nether Providence Township.  During this time the department has been successful in our efforts, and we have arrested 6 who committed burglaries here and 3 who have stolen vehicles and/or property from vehicles.

These arrests are the result of proactive police work by the dedicated Detectives and Officers of the department.  Much of their work could not have been possible had it not been for the residents and other citizens calling 9-1-1 when they observed suspicious activity in progress.  The calls to 9-1-1 have aided us in our desire to arrest those victimizing our residents, and we encourage everyone to continue to call 9-1-1.

Despite the success we have had in these apprehensions, we continue to recommend that you lock the doors and windows of your homes, cars, and out-buildings.  Make sure that you do this for second floor windows also, particularly if there are first floor roofs or trees that can provide access to your second floor windows.  Keep all wallets, pocketbooks, and other valuables out of sight where someone could see them from outside.  If you have an alarm, use it.  If your home is not alarmed, consider having one installed and include sensors on second story windows or entrance doors.

Last, remember to call 9-1-1 if you see or hear anything or anyone suspicious wandering in yours or your neighbors yards or near homes or cars.  Use our vacant building check program, and remember that your police officers are here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help you.
